In 2008 he was approached to join Noel Leeming to set up their commercial division. He has developed two multi million dollar divisions, cultivated a large successful nationwide team and grown sales year on year through the recession.
Dan is also on the Board of his Iwi, Ngati Ruanui, focusing on the strategies that will improve the lives of the 9000 people in his tribe. Under his guidance the Iwi has had numerous achievements such as the acquisition of the Taranaki Mountain House, setting up a te reo revival strategy, a company restructure and a record annual return of 12% for the last financial year.
Outside of his work obligations Dan is also a mentor for The First Foundation and has recently completed an Executive MBA. His commitment to personal development continues this year as he is now involved in the 2011 Leadership NZ Program. It’s not surprising that he was recently recognised as a Young Maori Leader of the Year at the Aotearoa Maori Business Leader Awards ad being awarded the 2011 NZ Institute of Management Young Executive of the year Finalist.
This Chief Operating Officer, Tim Edwards says, Dan has been intstrumental in formalising and developing the Commercial Sales Division at Noel Leeming Group, taking it from a small player to a division contributing around $100 million to the business. Last year this division was almost 70% of NLG’s Growth.
A proud dad and husband, Dan believes that the level of opportunities available to someone depends on their perspective. He leads his team through his EEE concept –
• Empowerment: Give the team enough freedom to foster innovation and creativity
• Expectation: Expect that the team will do a good job.
• Example: Leading by example – Never ask the team to do something I wouldn’t do personally.
